From March 3 to 6, Barcelona, Spain, is hosting Mobile World Congress 2025 (MWC), the premier event in the global mobile ecosystem. In this context, Apification (the development of APIs to enable system interactions) has emerged as one of the most dynamic trends in telecommunications, driving the transformation of telecom companies into technology-driven enterprises since 2024. Plusmo is leading this revolution by offering cutting-edge solutions that empower businesses to maximize the potential of APIs.
Following the GSMA’s Open Gateway initiative, introduced at MWC 2023, a new paradigm for designing telecom services was established. The goal is to provide a standardized framework for developers to access advanced network capabilities and create innovative digital applications and services. APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) serve as the gateway to these capabilities, enabling businesses to integrate network services seamlessly into their offerings.
How APIs Simplify Development for Businesses
An API is a set of codes that allows software programs to communicate, enabling the exchange of data, features, and functionalities between applications. APIs streamline software development by allowing programming teams to integrate existing data, services, or capabilities from other applications instead of building them from the ground up. By simplifying software development, APIs help companies accelerate their digital transformation, reduce costs, and improve time-to-market for new services.
By the end of 2024, Latin America had already seen the certification of 19 APIs and 15 more in development under the Open Gateway initiative. These APIs focus on critical areas such as fraud prevention, network quality optimization, payments, cloud services, and edge solutions. Plusmo plays a pivotal role in this ecosystem, driving the adoption and development of APIs that deliver tangible value to businesses and end-users.
Plusmo at the forefront: real-world use cases in apification
At MWC 2025, practical API implementations were presented, showing how the mobile industry is using APIs to drive digital transformation across various sectors, from finance to healthcare, while advancing process automation. Plusmo is at the heart of this transformation, leading the charge with innovative solutions.
One of the standout sectors for Plusmo is mobile identity APIs, which strengthen security and prevent fraud. At MWC 2025, this organization showcased a successful case study in collaboration with a telecom operator in Argentina. This project involved the implementation of the SIM Swap API within a digital wallet offering mobility services. The objective was to ensure customer identity verification and enhance the onboarding, login, and password recovery processes in a secure, Open Gateway-compliant environment.
Thanks to this API solution, if no SIM card change is detected during login or password recovery, the app logs the user in without requiring additional validation. However, if a SIM swap is detected, the app triggers an additional authentication step, ensuring heightened security. As a result, the digital wallet achieved a significant reduction in claims and chargebacks, while also seeing a sharp increase in customer satisfaction.
